*Minnesota Global presents: GMOs and Your Health December 2, 2003 -- 5:30 - 7 p.m. Minnesota Global, an ongoing series examining the impacts of globalization on Minnesota, presents Drs. Ãrpád Pusztai, Susan Bardócz and Charles Benbrook for "GMOs and Your Health." Dr. Pusztai's research findings indicated that a genetically engineered potato diet weakened rats' immune systems and adversely affected the animals' internal organs. When he shared his findings with the media (with his superior's permission), Dr. Pusztai was promptly fired from his research post.
Hear the whole story and the details of his research on Tues., Dec. 2 from 5:30-7 p.m. Visit the Minnesota Global site for information and complete archives of past events.

The Lancet Coverage of GM Food Safety and the Ewen-Pusztai Study
ARTICLE -- Effect of diets containing genetically modified potatoes expressing Galanthus nivalis lectin on rat small intestine, Lancet, October
16, 1999

EDITORIAL -- "Health risks of genetically modified foods," May 29, 1999, Volume 353. Editorial raises importance of growing debate over GM food safety and mentions basic findings of Pusztai research, quoting Pusztai's comment in an interview that he would not eat the GM potatoes himself, and that it is "very, very unfair to use our fellow citizens as guineapigs." This ediorial appears over five months before the publication by "The Lancet" of the Ewen-Pusztai paper on the GM potato experiment.]http://www.biotech-info.net/Lancet_Editorial_353.9167.pdf
LETTERS -- "Health risks of genetically modified foods," July 3, 1999, Volume 354. Three letters respond to the May 29th editorial -- two criticizing it and the Ewen-Pusztai study, one supporitng the need for more openness in regulatory risk assessments and decision-making.

COMMENTARY -- Genetically modified foods: "absurd" concern or welcome dialogue?" October 16, 2003 Commentary by Richard Horton imploring an open dialogue surrounding the EU GM issues -- "berating critics, rather than engaging them, and critisizing reports of research...will only intensify public scepticism about science and scientists."
