* After rising concerns to protect Peru from genetically modified organisms, the ministry confirms its stance

The Ministry of the Environment announced that it will continue to protect Peru’s biodiversity and hold its strong stance on the moratorium on transgenic seeds.

Minister of the Environment, Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, confronted concerns that genetically modified organisms were potentially entering the country and affirmed that in fact the prohibition initiated in Nov. 2011 is still in place.

“The moratorium stands firm: it will remain in force. The Agriculture Ministry has also expressed its support to the moratorium and the law passed in November, 2011,” Pulgar-Vidal stated.

Of the many tactics included in the moratorium, Pulgar-Vidal details that three major tasks are at hand. The most significant is the targeting of access points and preventing direct entry of GMOs.

“A piece of legislation was issued three weeks ago to establish the monitoring mechanisms at ports and airports,” the minister told RPP.

Secondly, the ministry is working to develop biotechnology to better use genetic resources and finally to promote the biological diversity of Peru.
