Dear all,
While many pro-GM commentators hail the technology's ability to help farmers cope with the consequences of drought, basic plant physiology is proving the task far more difficult than is often portrayed.
However, even if GM could engineer more drought tolerant plants, which is far from clear, it will take years and come at a considerable cost.
Meanwhile cheap, or even free, non-GM techniques and technologies are available now.
A new briefing from GM Freeze (available at www.gmfreeze.org/uploads/drought_briefing_final.pdf) explores these issues and suggests that rather than pouring yet more money into a technology with no assurance of delivery, we should instead expand the use of these non-GM, more sustainable approaches today.
We hope you find it interesting.
Eve
