Challenge to Steve Connor

Steve Connor is the Independent's science editor. Connor was one of the 3 UK journalists who recently aggressively spun Greenpeace's critique of Golden Rice so as to make it appear Greenpeace were backing off in their opposition to GM crops. He was also the most prominently involved UK journalist in the SIRC's attempt to "improve" the UK media's coverage of the GM debate [see: http://members.tripod.com/~ngin/scisale.htm ]

Marcus Williamson has been posing Connor some interesting questions on the character of his own coverage of this issue (others might like to join the correspondence?) - here's an example

Try this search :
http://services.searchuk.com/0000002/search.cgi?search=gm&datemode=from&startdate=1&startmonth=1&startyear=2001&enddate=31&endmonth=12&endyear=2001&date_from=1%2F1%2F2001&date_to=31%2F12%2F2001

and look at the articles which come up. Then look at the articles which are upbeat and/or positive about GM foods. They are all by you...

For example, recently :
"GM crops 'unlikely to become super weeds'"
8 February 2001
Steve Connor

and :
"How a glowing monkey will help cure disease"
12 January 2001
Steve Connor

Whereas :
"Top scientists urge more caution over GM crops"
9 February 2001
Marie Woolf

Why is this? What is your agenda in promoting genetic modification of food and animals?

Marcus Williamson
