Top 100 influencers - GMWatch number 4

Please support us!

A new report by social network analysis firm Onalytica places GMWatch fourth in the “Top 100 Brands” category for the biggest influencers in the GMO vs organic debate on Twitter.

The only people ahead of us are the Just Label It pro-GMO-labelling campaign, which is in first place, Monsanto in second place, and Slate magazine in third place.

Slate’s prominence is worrying, as is the second place ranking of Slate columnist William Saletan in the “Top 100 Individuals” list. This is because Saletan’s reports on GMOs for Slate have been exposed as seriously misleading in a series of articles by GMWatch’s Claire Robinson:

Errors, fraud, lies, and William Saletan – Part 1: Golden rice
Errors, fraud, lies, and William Saletan – Part 2: GMO food safety
Errors, fraud, lies, and William Saletan – Part 3: GM papaya: Saviour or health risk?
Lessons in critical thinking and William Saletan – Part 1

It’s good to see the young campaigner Rachel Parent of Kids’ Right to Know ranked no. 3 in the “Top 100 Individuals”, behind GMO-skeptical author Jennifer Lang and Slate’s Saletan.

While it’s great to hear of GMWatch’s high ranking in the GMO debate, we often struggle for funding. Whereas Monsanto has billions in revenues, Slate has been backed by Microsoft among others, and even Just Label It is supported by major organic brands, GMWatch has no big business backing of any kind, and we depend on the support of readers like you to keep us afloat, along with the help of a small number of foundations.

Please help us by donating here: http://www.gmwatch.org/donations

You can donate wherever you are in the world and whatever your ‘home’ currency is. A regular donation, if you can afford it, is particularly helpful, but so too are all donations large and small.

In return we promise to keep getting the word out on GMOs, not just on Twitter but across all platforms.

We were set up to counter the propaganda of the biotech industry. Let’s keep after them!
