GMWatch is an independent organisation that seeks to counter the enormous corporate political power and propaganda of the biotech industry and its supporters. We do this through our website, our lists, our Powerbase portal, LobbyWatch, the BanGMFood campaign, social media, and other outreach and campaigning activities. GMWatch was founded in 1998 by Jonathan Matthews and its managing editors are Jonathan Matthews and Claire Robinson. GMWatch isn't funded by big business, government or political parties. It exists on a shoestring budget, being mostly funded by donations from individual supporters. We also receive some modest funding for aspects of our work from a small number of NGOs. For 2010 these included Friends of the Earth Europe, Friends of the Earth UK and the Soil Association. We also received funding from the Courtyard Trust. In July 2011 GMWatch began to provide editorial support to the newsletters of the Institute of Responsible Technology (IRT), for which a GMWatch editor receives payment from the IRT. GMWatch's work is also supported by the work of dedicated volunteers in a number of different countries around the world. We are very grateful for this support.
