It seems that EU Commission President Juncker is using the ill-thought-out proposal for EU member states to opt out of GMO imports approved at the EU level as a figleaf to give the impression that EU member states have a choice regarding which GMO food and feed crops their citizens consume.

In reality, the opt-out proposal regarding imports is so legally weak that EU member states will not have any real choice but to accept all GMO imports that the Commission has approved.

Commenting on today's decision by the Commission to allow imports of 19 genetically modified organisms (GMO), including 17 GM crops and 2 GM flowers, Greenpeace EU food policy director Franziska Achterberg said:

"Juncker’s decision just confirms that he has no intention of bringing the EU closer to its citizens. Instead, he’s moving closer to the US and Monsanto.”

“Earlier this week Juncker broke his promise to change rules that force GM crops onto the EU market even if a majority of countries opposes them. Today he opened the flood gates to a new wave of GM crops only to please US biotech corporations and trade negotiators. This is TTIP in action."
