Anti-GM demonstrators blockaded a Sainsbury distribution centre today in protest over its cattle feed.

The protesters stopped delivery lorries leaving the Merseyside depot in Millfield Lane, Haydock [UK], during the early hours as part of an ongoing campaign against the supermarket.

They said they took action because Sainsbury continues to feed dairy cattle foodstuffs which they cannot guarantee do not contain genetically modified products.

Police said the protest, which began around 11.30pm yesterday, was peaceful and they hoped it would end shortly.

Lorries were stopped from leaving to stock stores in the Merseyside region by up to 20 people who had linked arms across the exit.

A Sainsbury spokeswoman said she was surprised the chain was still being targeted as they were the only UK supermarket to be trailing a milk from cattle which are guaranteed not to have feed with GM products.

The trial is running in 100 stores and will be extended if a success, she added.

Protester Claire Middleton said: ‚"Three years ago Sainsbury said it would stop GM feed for its cattle but they are still using it.

"That is why we are here tonight."

Sainsbury said it hoped the demonstration would not affect deliveries if it ended soon.
