An international conference will be held next week, Thurs 12–Fri 13 November, at the University Paris-Sud, Orsay, near Paris, France, on the substantial equivalence of GMOs – the basis of regulatory authorisations of all GMOs across the world – and the risk assessment of pesticides.

This project is funded by the Region Ile-de-France. It involves the University Paris-Sud (UPSud), the NGO Générations Futures, and the Committee for Independent Research and Information on Genetic Engineering (CRIIGEN). It is coordinated by Dr Christian Vélot, molecular geneticist at the UPSud and Vice-President of CRIIGEN, and François Veillerette, spokesman of Générations Futures.

It has a stellar group of scientist speakers, including Prof Rubens Nodari of the University of Santa Catarina, Brazil; Prof Gilles-Eric Séralini; Dr Thomas Bohn of Genøk, Norway; and Dr Robin Mesnage of King’s College London.

Representatives of NGOs will participate in the discussions, including Hans Muilerman of Pesticides Action Network Europe, François Veillerette of Générations Futures, and Dr Christoph Then of Testbiotech.
