Good news: Brazil's Supreme Court of Justice (STJ) denied on Wednesday 21 February the extension application filed by Monsanto on its patent on Roundup Ready 1 (RR1) soybean variety. This confirms that the company does not have the right to collect royalties on this variety.

This decision will favour the court cases brought by the farmers' unions, Famato and Rural Trade Union of Mato Grosso, which state that the patent expired in 2010.

Monsanto said it will appeal the ruling:

Monsanto stands to lose billions of dollars in revenues from its GM RR soybeans, after court decisions in farmer-brought class action lawsuits ruled that the patent had expired and that the company had been collecting royalties illegally for years.
