This is REALLY sick stuff. It makes my head spin to think what a sheltered life I live. Tears come to my eyes when I see the kitten in the beaker. I cry out to the almighty to help us end this madness””end it now.

Cyprus Orthodox Church declares opposition to cloning for any aim
Agence France Presse February 14, 2002 Thursday

NICOSIA, Feb 14: The Holy Synod in Cyprus on Thursday sent out a clear message that it opposed human cloning in any form because it conflicted with the fundamental principles of Christianity. "Cloning goes against human ethics and does not show the appropriate respect for man who is made in God's image," Synod secretary Father Marios Demetriou told reporters after Thursday's marathon session. Before Thursday's first ever synod debate on cloning, some senior clergy had expressed support for cloning if it helped childless couples or cure diseases like cancer. "It (cloning) must be avoided for any purpose, the decison was unanimous," said Father Demetriou empathically. In a strongly worded statement the church declared: "Such methods humiliate the freedom, dignity, holiness and uniqueness of human beings."

Last November parliament approved a bio-ethics bill which banned human cloning for fertility purposes but allowed genetic engineering for medical research. Cyprus has signed the European Convention on Human Rights and Biomedicine but it awaits ratification by parliament. Authorities acted quickly to close the door to scientists who might use the island as a possible centre for cloning experiments due to a lack of legislation at the time. US-based Cypriot fertility pioneer Dr Panayiotis Zavos heads a group of doctors who seek to clone a human baby.
