POLL - Most Italians oppose genetic foods
ITALY: March 21, 2001

ROME - Most Italians oppose genetic engineering of their foods because of health worries, an opinion poll showed.  According to the survey by the Farm Ministry this month, 67 percent of a sample of 1,200 people, including 400 farmers, were against using genetically modified organisms in food production due to possible health risks.  Eighty percent of those questioned by market research group PeopleSwg said they would be willing to spend a little extra to acquire good-quality traditional or organic produce.

According to another recent poll of big retailers by Rome-based agricultural research institute ISMEA, 65 percent said Italian demand for organic foods was growing, while 67 percent said consumers were poorly informed about it.  Organic foods are rising in popularity due to worries over the impact of intensive farming on food safety, consumer groups say, pointing to scares such as mad cow disease and foot-and-mouth.
