Petition against GM food
http://southasia.oneworld.net/event/petition-against-gm-foods

Greenpeace has come up with a petition to muster support against the Biotechnology Regulatory Authority of India (BRAI) Bill which lowers the bar for bio-safety tests of GM food crops through the proposed regulatory system.

Multinational seed companies want to genetically modify our food and control it. If we don't raise our voice, our government might just let them go ahead with their experiments.

An illegal field trial of genetically modified (GM) corn was exposed in the Bijapur district of Karnataka. Immense public opposition made the Karnataka government ban field trials in the state. However Monsanto, the company conducting this trial, has not been punished for the violation.

Now the government is trying to table the Biotechnology Regulatory Authority of India (BRAI) bill in the monsoon session of Parliament. The bill is designed to create a body which will allow GM crops into the country. Instead of stopping these companies, the government is only making things easier for them.

We should ask Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to stop this bill because it will hand too much power to seed companies.

Public pressure helped get a moratorium on genetically modified Bt brinjal in 2010. This can be achieved again. Support from millions of people will help put pressure on the PM to stop this bill.

If not stopped, GM seed manufacturers will control our food and farming as farmers will have to go buy seeds from them each season.

Ask the PM to save our food and farming now.
